Using South African case studies, it highlights the consequences of fragmented practice and demonstrates how integrated planning, design, engineering, and governance deliver better development outcomes for communities.
Speaker Bio
Professor Hangwelani Hope Magidimisha-Chipungu is a Professor of Town and Regional Planning at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the SARChI Chair for Inclusive Cities. An NRF-rated researcher, she is the first Black South African woman to become a Full Professor in Town and Regional Planning. She serves as a National Planning Commissioner in the Presidency of South Africa, a Board Member of ISOCARP, and Director of the ISOCARP Young Planning Professionals (YPP) Programme. She is also the Senior Editor of the Journal of Climate Interactions, published by Taylor & Francis, and the Chief Editor and Founder of the Journal for Inclusive Cities and Built Environment. She served as the Alternate Chairperson of the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN), Chairperson of the SACPLAN Transformation Committee, and a City Planning Commissioner for the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Professor Magidimisha-Chipungu is internationally recognised for her work on inclusive cities, climate change and resilience cities, spatial justice, and sustainable urban development, and she is the host of this webinar.
